A recent article on blueandgreentomorrow.com focuses on 3 Ways Manufacturers Are Adopting Eco-Friendly Packaging. In the article it explores the following…

  • Environmentally Friendly Inks – There are a variety of environmentally friendly ink options. The article mentions that “More and more ink producers are turning to environmentally friendly solutions, so there is now a wide selection of green inks. Whether you’re printing on containers of food, industrial parts, or anything else, there’s a green ink that’s designed to meet your needs.” This is the first step in eco-friendly packaging and essential when it comes to food products.
  • Responsible Packaging Practices – in the article they suggest that “Reducing the footprint of your packaging is a relatively simple process based on principles with which we’re all familiar: reduce, reuse, and recycle.” This includes making as much of the product recyclable as possible. This sounds simple, but the manufacturer needs to bear in mind the feasibility of recyclable packaging. Is the recycling system able to handle demand? Is there any place to bring compostable products? For example: a landfill may seem the ideal location for compostable materials, however, since they are required to cover their waste every 24 hours. This eliminates the three things needed to compost (light, heat and oxygen).
  • Improving Waste Management – this applies to the entire manufacturing process, not just packaging. Going back to inks, the one instance where environmentally friendly might be misleading in with regards to printing water-based inks on film. Unfortunately this process is not sustainable or cost effective. The practice produces more waste from raw materials, as the use of more inks and film is required.

As the article states, “Cutting down on waste will save time and money in addition to appealing to forward-thinking customers.” These are all serious considerations when it comes to eco-friendly packaging.

The article goes on to say that “Packaging is just one aspect of a company’s operations, but cutting down on packaging waste can have a tremendous impact on environmental degradation and use of resources.”
