From sustainability to convenience, the benefits can’t be ignored.

An article on PackagingStrategies.com this month outlined the many ways that flexible packaging is expanding to make products not only more sustainable, but more convenient, too! Flexible packages are easier to carry and more spill-proof, making them perfect for toting refreshments during summer activities.

The Arizton Advisory & Intelligence report is cited in the article as saying that the food industry now accounts for more than 70 percent of the flexible packaging market, and it’s expected to grow to $212 billion worldwide by 2026. Flexible pouches can replace cans as well as plastic and glass bottles, and they are lighter and take up less space. Some brewers are even introducing flexible pouches to replace glass growlers, eliminating light damage and oxygen while lowering their carbon footprint. Flexible beverage packages can be fitted with taps and spouts for ready-to-serve wine, dairy, juice, water, and other products. According to the article, Horizon Organic has a goal of actually becoming carbon positive across its full supply chain by 2025, thanks in part to its use of flexible pouches for yogurt.

Manufacturers like AMGRAPH are continuing to innovate with sustainable components for flexible packaging in anticipation of market growth. The Flexible Packaging Association’s report, “A Holistic View of the Role of Flexible Packaging in a Sustainable World,” says that flexible packaging offers benefits over rigid packages like:

  • Material/resource efficiency
  • Lightweight/source reduction
  • Transportation benefits due to inbound format and lightweight nature
  • Shelf-life extension
  • Reduced materials to landfill
  • High product-to-package ratio
